Last Memorial Day weekend, with my mom and grandad I visited my uncle in North Carolina. We went to see the Battleship North Carolina and while we were there several people were setting up a "healing field" on the lawn. There was 1 flag placed on the lawn for every soldier who died in Iraq. My mom bought one for me, but we had to come back home before the display would be taken down. A few months later my uncle came up here and brought me my flag. On it was this information:

In grateful memory of Army Sgt. Jamie O. Maugans age 27, from Wichita, Kan., who died on 4/15/2002 in Afganistan while defending liberty for you and me.

I researched his name on the web and found this website dedicated to him:

On February 2, he would have been 30.

  USMC ORDER !($%
Posted by: Cadetat6 - 02-01-2006, 07:40 PM - Forum: The Papa Art Section! - Replies (2)

The original order is hard to read. This is re-typed order so you can read it.

13 March 1945.

SQUADRON GENERAL ORDER ) Security Measures.

NUMBER………………….16-1945 )

1. Information has been received to the effect that

Seven enemy parties each consisting of one officer and eleven

Men will attempt to penetrate the perimeter and create havoc.

It is assumed that some members of each party will speak good

English probably with an American accent

2. It is likely that their mode of operation will

Contemplate the acquisition of hide-out areas outside the peri-

Meter from which one or two men from each party will be sent

Inside the perimeter at night-time to select suitable objectives

And reconnoiter the routes thereto for subsequent attack. It

Is assumed that their operations will be confined to the hours

Of darkness..

3 The following emergency security measures

For this camp will be effective immeadiately. These will be ampli-

Fied from time to time as circumstanced require:

( a ) Twenty-four hour watches will be established

on guard post 1 and 2.

( b ) Between the hours of 1900 and 0700 the guards

on all posts will be doubled. Sdditional personnel required to

do this will be obtained from all departments on the basis of

a schedule to be prepared by the Quard Officer Should the

additional guard assignments conflict with the watch assignments

of the various departments adjustments will be made by the use

of supernumeraries. The new guard schedule contemplates that

each additional guard will serve one four-hour watch approximately

every ten ( 10 ) days.

( c ) The communications section will establish iys

own guard for the security of its installations. This guard

while on duty, will be responsible to the Guard Officer.

( d ) Personnel are cautioned not to wonder about the

camp area after dark unless it is absolutely necessary. Those who

are not on duty, should remain in their quarterd after the movies.

Bounds to personnel of this command:

( a ) Piva Strip.

Yes this is a REAL letter from Dick's wife. It doesn't surprise me at all that they have had enough media exposure and fan adolation. This was sent to me by Barry Poulter a few weeks ago.

----------

Will you please put on your web site that Dick is no longer signing

pictures, books, or posters.

Any mail from persons unknown will be thrown away and not answered.

Any packages containing books will be refused at the post office.

We feel it is time to retire and get some peace and quiet in our old age.

Regards,

Ethel
