From the Dick Winters site
#1

Yes this is a REAL letter from Dick's wife. It doesn't surprise me at all that they have had enough media exposure and fan adolation. This was sent to me by Barry Poulter a few weeks ago.

----------

Will you please put on your web site that Dick is no longer signing

pictures, books, or posters.

Any mail from persons unknown will be thrown away and not answered.

Any packages containing books will be refused at the post office.

We feel it is time to retire and get some peace and quiet in our old age.

Regards,

Ethel

Major Winters has been in poor health for some time yet he felt he should answer as many requests as possible.

The shear volumn had become overwhelming and the family was spending too much of his remaining time on it and the time has come to let him live in the peace and quiet he sought at the end of the war.

Can't blame them a bit. I'm sure they wanted to scream out at times, "Enough already!"

It bugs me enough not having privacy because our house is attached to the store. When we first moved here, people would literally just walk into our house. Not even knock. Why? Well the lady that owned it before had her own house down state. She would just drive up on the weekend. So she didn't live here. It was more or less like a visit, so she was just here for Fri and Sat nights. Therefore it was almost like an open-policy.

When we moved in, many people just felt that things should be the same. Hell no baby. :pdt33: Hey, this is our private house. How would you like it if I just walked into your house any time I wanted to? So we had to crack down on that right away.

Of course we still have to deal with the fact that there is NO bathroom in the store. Yup, when we have employees work they have to come in several times a day to use the bathroom. Well this has gone on for almost 4 years. This month we are building a bathroom in the store. Then the door between the house and store gets LOCKED. It's really starting to get to me. Just think of it. You can never be truly alone.

So just with that going on, I can appreciate PRIVACY or the lack of it.

Marion, what kind of store do you have?

Hey, I live in West Virginia... I've seen a few of those out door privies, never had the courage to use one though.

Oh you city girls! Hey we moved from Detroit (no not the burbs) to this itty-bitty city called Alger, MI almost 4 years ago. Town = approx 600 folks.

The store we own was built in 1889. House attached in 1900. See it here:

I did see your post on the map, but where exactly do you live in West Virginny again? Thanks, M

Wine, beer AND groceries! What more could a person ask for?

I just love old places. :D

I live in Fayetteville, southern West Virginia. Right smack on the Mason-Dixon line, home of the world's longest single arch bridge.
