Jack Moore - 937th Aviation Eng Bn

From our Guestbook

search of 937th engineer batalion

Where are you from? Oklahoma City, OK

Please enter your comments? My dad, Jack Moore, was in the 937th aviation camoflage engineer batalion in WW2. They landed in Normandy Omaha Beach approximately D-day+10. The allied forces had still not broken out from the hedgerows and there was still German resistance in the towns of St.Lo, Cann and Carentan. Their mission was to build both dummy airfields for the Germans to expend their bombs and hasty runways for fighter planes to take off from. They traveled through France, Belgium, Luxemberg, Holland, and Germany. Dad did talk of being strafed by German fighter planes and a buz-bomb landing in a nearby hedgerow that killed a soldier. He told me a story of how a German fighter plane dived at him from above while he was in a rail yard trying to hide in the snow on a moon lit night between some rail road tracks. The plane dropped a bomb about a hundred meters down the tracks (too close for comfort). The 937th trained hard to fight the enemy if necessary however as dad says it, "I got a good ringside seat to see the war and never fired on the enemy."

  American troops Scharding, Austria
Posted by: Walt's Daughter - 01-06-2007, 09:08 PM - Forum: OTHER WWII UNIT STORIES AND INFO - Replies (3)

Received this letter today from Austria.

Dear Mrs. Chard !

Does your father join the entry of the American troops to Austria at Schärding (on the river Inn), a village near Passau. ?

Do you have some photos or memories ? Please contact me. I am a researcher of my hometown .

Best regards and thank you very much for your help.

Mag. Anna Gugerbauer, Schärding, Austria

I replied with the following:

==============================

Dear Anna:

Thanks for writing. All the photos I have are on the web site on the photos pages. You can view them at any time. As I acquire new photos, I place them on the web from other people.

I will have to look up the names of the towns and villages in my NARA records for that period. I know they were in Berchtesgaden the first week of July and spent most of their time in Germany. If I find out anything, I will keep you posted.

I am currently writing a book on my dad's unit and the VI Corps Engineers. It will be at least several more months before I start pulling the data from my National Archive files for 1945.

I'd be happy to work with you. It's always great to have another connection.

You may want to join our Forum and place your request for information there. We have a lot of knowledgable folks and many veterans participate too. They may be able to help you.

Regards,

Marion Chard

I wrote back to her again a few minutes ago and gave her this info in the interim.

=============================

Here's a web page regarding the 65th Inf Div who were there. Will send anything I can find.

Received this from James Hennessey of the 87th Infantry Division

Marion

At this time of year I always recollect

A person or place from WW2.We called

Cpl.Cornish ,Pop as relative to the

young soldiers in our outfit,he was in his

thirties.Somehow he took a liking to

me(not hard to do).More or less a

guardian angel non com.Whenever

we come back from the front in trucks,

he would run up to the tailgate and

yell "Where's Hennessey is he OK"?

Just a tid bit but I will never forget

His concern for a young G. I. I imagine

he has passed on,never saw him again

after I was wounded. Thanks anyway

Cpl Cornish up there in G.I.Heaven.

Hugs---Jim

  36th Engineers in Iraq
Posted by: Walt's Daughter - 01-06-2007, 12:26 AM - Forum: Current Events - Replies (3)

I can bring you up to date on the busy 36th Engineers. The Brigade Hq just got back from Fort Bragg where they drilled with the 82nd AB. They are ready to go to Afghanistan this Spring andd will have with them the 864th Construction EB and the 70th Mechanized Combat EB, the 20th Combat EB is still in Iraq and the 62nd EB just returned from Iraq to Fort Hood, and the 8th EB is moving from Germany to Fort Hood this summer. How Colonel Stevens can keep track of all of them is a mystery, he is sure busy.

36 Engineers are rugged......John Fallon II. Capt. USA Ret.
