  501st Engineer Light Ponton Company

<span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'>your_name: William Wiseman

cityst: Bloomington, MN

through: Search Engine

comments: I have been trying to find out any info about my Dad, Arthur F. Wiseman who was the CO of the 501 army engineers during the invasion of Normandy. He passed away in 1977 and I can't find out anything about the 501 engineers. Can you help me? Thanks!

=============================

Dear William:

This indeed is a tough one. The only thing I was able to determine at this moment in time is that the 501st were a light pontoon company. I found one reference to them regarding building a bridge over the Rhine in Germany. I will scan the page this weekend (I'm going out of town for two days) and get back with you. There's just one line that talks about the 148th Engineers and states that they were to receive help from the 291st and 501st in the Remagen area.

But don't despair, they are many avenues to continue your search for your dad's unit. First off go to my research page and view the links I've provided.

  291rst Engineer Btn
Posted by: afc7883 - 08-13-2006, 12:59 AM - Forum: WWII ENGINEERS - Replies (7)

Anything Engineer is probably not news to Marion, but I saw a program tonight about the 291rst, and a Colonel David Pergrin's engineers... who blew the bridges ahead of Kampfegruppe Peiper, spoiling the plans of Der Fuhrer during the batlle of the Bulge. Actually it was part of a DVD I ordered from the History Channel about 'Unsung Heroes of WWII'...a theme close to my heart ;) . There are so many small groups of Americans that were responsible for turning the tide of that offensive...it just really makes you proud every time you learn more about these boys! None of them will ever become household names, but I believe it was that small unit initiative that Americans seem to posess that really lead the way to victory...

So.. :drinkin: to 291rst!

  The Fuhrer's Bible!

Sent to me by Russ Weiskircher

Source: UPI

HAMBURG, Germany (UPI) -- Although he hated organized religion, Nazi leader Adolf Hitler rewrote the Christian bible and added two commandments.

In 1941, some 100,000 Third Reich bibles called "Germans with God" were distributed to Germany's churches, and while most were destroyed by devout Christians during the war, a copy was recently found in a Hamburg church, the Daily Mirror reported Tuesday.

The most notable additions to the 10 Commandments were: "Honor your Fuhrer and master" and "Keep the blood pure and your honor holy," the newspaper said.

Variations on the remaining 10 were as follows:

"Honor God and believe in him wholeheartedly, Seek out the peace of God, Avoid all hypocrisy, Holy is your health and life, Holy is your well-being and honor, Holy is your truth and fidelity, Honor your father and mother -- your children are your aid and your example, Maintain and multiply the heritage of your forefathers, Be ready to help and forgive and Joyously serve the people with work and sacrifice."

The 36th Engineers Still going strong today!
Posted by: Walt's Daughter - 08-11-2006, 07:01 AM - Forum: WWII ENGINEERS - No Replies

The Brigade is still settling in to Fort Hood. Colonel Stevens sent me a list of the units that are in the Brigade and I thought you would be interested. The 20th Engineer Bn is presently at Hood and is about to deploy to Iraq. The 8th and the 62nd Engineer Battalions are either there or in the process of getting there. What was most interesting to me is that the 36th Engineer Battalion, our former 1st Battalion is joining them. I can't help thinking that it would be great if they could also get the 14th and the 19th Engineer Battalions and we would have all three back together again. The Brigade is also responsible for training NG and Reserve Battalions.

Wanted to share this with you because it was so beautiful. This was sent to James Hennessey of the 87th Inf Div.

------------

Dear Mr. Hennessey,

I would like to Thank You for fighting for our freedom! I have great respect for you and all the man who fought for our freedom. Going so far from home, risk you life and made such sacrifices for people that you don't even know is such a great thing to do. Thanks to man like you we have our freedom.

I read your note on the In Honoured Glory Website Guestbook in which wrote that you served in Co. E, 345th Regt, 87th (Golden Acorn)Inf. Div. during WW2.

I'm 25 years old and I live in the Netherlands, and since I can remember I'm interested in WW2. And because I’ m very interested in WW2, I have read books about WW2 and all the Campaign´s and saw some really interesting documentaries on the Television, as well as on DVD. And, like many others, I have the DVD Box Band of Brothers, which I find really interesting because it is very emotional and through my eyes realistic.

I always listened with the most respect to my Grandparents stories, about how they survived the war and how they managed to stay out of the Germans hands.

Again I want to say Thank You for what you did 60 years ago!

I wish you all the best and if you ever want to share your stories, I would be very interested to read them with the most respect.

May God Bless you,

With Friendly Regards,

Marc van Rooijen
