  1621st Model Making Detachment
Posted by: Walt's Daughter - 08-22-2007, 07:18 PM - Forum: WWII ENGINEERS - Replies (2)

Hello,

Yesterday I posted a note on your website for my 83 year old boss who has alzheimers disease. His name is Gordon Elmer Keith and he was a member of the 1621st Model Making Detachment in Caserta, Italy, I believe. I couldn't find any info on this particular unit. He loves to talk and read about the war, and I think this would be great for him if there was any info on the other men in his detachment. Let me know what I can do to make his day!

Marion's note: She posted this in our guestbook, and I told her I would help her out too.

MOS Chief of section 864? - Artillery unit
Posted by: Walt's Daughter - 08-21-2007, 10:26 PM - Forum: OTHER WWII UNIT STORIES AND INFO - Replies (1)

Received this question. I supplied what I could, but would appreciate help with this answer. Thanks to all.

Hello, you are the only WW2 VI Corps org I could find. A relative of mine served in the VI Corps during WW2 in 5 campaigns in an artillery unit. I have a scrap of paper that says he was a Staff Sgt and \"MOS Chief of section 864\". Do you have any idea what \"MOS Chief of section 864\" means?

Thank you for your time, Russell

================

Hello Russell:

Glad you found me.

Basically a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) is a job classification in use in the United States Army and Marine Corps. An artillery battery is the same as a company.

However I am not sure of the section designation, and therefore will post this on my forum tonight.

Regards,

Marion

  Tank Battle Crosses State Lines
Posted by: Walt's Daughter - 08-21-2007, 02:47 PM - Forum: WWI - No Replies

(as taken from Military History Magazine - July August 2007)

Tensions are truly explosive in tiny Nitro, W.Va., after a local family sold its heirloom tank to an Indiana-based armor museum. Patriarch Jack Moody acquired the WWI-era tank (modeled after a Renault FT-17) from a Virginia VFW post in 1987 and put it on public display. But when Moody passed away two years ago, his family removed the tank. According to Nitro Mayor Rusty Casto, the Moodys told him that the tank was being refurbished. As time passed however, Casto became suspicious. Months later he turned up the late-model Renault at the Ropkey Armor Museum (http://www.ropkeyarmormuseum.com) in Crawfordsville, Ind. Now hizzoner wants "Nitro's tank" back.

Nothing doing, says museum owner Fred Ropkey, himself a former tanker. Ropkey, who had refurbished armored vehicles for the Marine Corps Museum in Quantico, Va., spent $100,000 renovating this tank and won't let it go without a fight. Word of advice: The guy with the tank wins.

  more WWII Howard Vets
Posted by: arve - 08-21-2007, 12:34 PM - Forum: ANYTHING WWII - Replies (3)

Here are some photos of Dad's first cousins who were also WWII vets.

First photo Paul Howard to my left US Army and John Howard to my

right US Marine WWII. Clearly, we were having a great time!

(As usual, I was having a bad hair day. People ask me all the time if

my hair color is real and I say "Do you think I'd do this to my self on purpose?!"

My t shirt says: "If you value your freedom, thank a Vet!" and I'm wearing my

WWII Memorial pin.)

John Howard was one of the most fabulous human beings I've ever known.

Whenever I'd see him at family events, it was just like seeing a rock star.

I had to curb the tendency to follow him around, hanging on his every word

and making a terrible PEST out of myself. He was a GENIUS and truly one of

the most deeply spiritual people I've ever known. He passed away suddenly

about a month after this photo was taken. Oh how I miss him! He was such an

amazing multi-talented person, it was hard to keep up with him - but I really wish

that I'd talked with him more about his experiences as a marine on Iwo Jima.

The second photo is L-R: John Koumjian a WWII Marine who was also at Iwo Jima

and also had escaped the Armenian genocide, fleeing with his mother.

John is 95 and going strong (married to Dad's first cousin Mary Howard Koumjian

on the far right of the photo), Paul Howard, me, John Howard, my cousin Elaine

O'Connor Maynes (daughter of my great Aunt Ellen Howard) and Mary Howard Koumjian.
