  Ruptured duck
Posted by: Walt's Daughter - 06-13-2005, 09:38 PM - Forum: ANYTHING WWII - Replies (2)

Am bidding on a Ruptured Duck pin on Ebay this week too. So far it is mine, but we have about 4 days to go. In case some of you don't know, the Ruptured Duck was given to GI's who were honorably discharged from the Army. Here's a bit of history...

The Origin of "The Ruptured Duck" Insignia

The original Ruptured Duck was a cloth insignia depicting an eagle inside a wreath. It was worn on uniforms above the right breast pocket by WWII servicemen and women.

It was issued to service personnel who were about to leave the military with an Honorable Discharge. It also allowed them to continue to wear their uniform for up to thirty days after they were discharged since there was a clothing shortage at that time. This showed the MP's that they were in transit and not AWOL. Well, the boys thought the eagle looked more like a duck; and, because it meant they were going home, the popular saying was, "They took off like a Ruptured Duck"...hence the nickname.

I am also bidding on a book called the Corps of Engineers of the United States Army. Right now I am the current high bidder. This would be a great addition to my growing collection.

Posted by: Walt's Daughter - 06-11-2005, 08:45 AM - Forum: ANYTHING WWII - Replies (16)

How cool is this people? A friend send me an email this morning letting me know about a combat engineer's Ike jacket up for bid. Read it to my hubby and he said go for it. So wish me luck. One day left. Fingers crossed, even though I'm NOT superstitious! ;)

------------

ORIGINAL WW2 COMBAT ENGINEER UNIFORM 48TH BATTALION. Bought from local veterans estate. Corporal served with the 48th Engineer combat battalion in the ETO. Ike jacket just as found hanging in a closet for decades. Has 1944 dated spec tag, size 36R. Has 2nd Corps and 7th Army patches, engineer seahorse patch on chest pocket, corporal stripes, 4 overseas bars. Looks like it has a discharge patch at one time. Comes with 2 period photos of buddies and a foreign bank note. Has some scattered mothing but not too bad, a dry cleaning probably is in order, displays well, name of veteran will be given to winner as well as a copy of his photo from his unit history.

  Anne Frank's Birthday June 12
Posted by: Walt's Daughter - 06-11-2005, 07:53 AM - Forum: ANYTHING WWII - Replies (1)

Anne Frank was just thirteen years old when she and her family went into hiding behind the Amsterdam office of her father to avoid persecution by Hitler's Nazis. One of her dearest possessions was the diary she had just received as a birthday present. Anne died of typhus in March of 1945 at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, but her father survived to publish her diary in 1947. Today, translated into sixty-seven languages, Anne Frank's diary has been read by millions.
