Looking for PFC Allan J. Mulgrew 1175th Engineer Combat Group
#1

Allan J. Mulgrew

Enlisted: 11 Sep 1942 at Ft. Devens, Mass.

Discharged: 20 Oct 1945

Service number: (?) 31084036

I’m trying learn more about my grandfather's service. I requested his service record from the St. Louis Archives, but no luck, they said they were destroyed in the fire.

I found his name on line: Allan J. Mulgrew, (PFC) on a unit roster of M Company 254th Infantry Reg. on 23 August 1945. When I asked about it, Fred Clinton Webmaster for 63rd Infantry Division web site, said Allan came from the 1175th Engineer Combat Group and was assigned to the 254th INF REG for movement back to the US. Through a little looking around, it seems the 1175th Engineer Combat Group was under VI Corps. Maybe someone at 6thcorpscombatengineers.com might know something or have some unit rosters, etc….

I'm retired military myself. Never knew him as my grandmother and grandfather divorced when my mother was young. But, I'm into family history and genealogy, and of course the military association.

In any case, maybe someone contact me if anything should pop up.

Thanks,

Brian

Hi Brian and welcome to our forum. Hope we can help you discover some info on this group, etc.

Well, let's see what we can come up with...

There was a post in 2009 in another related topic:

http://www.6thcorpscombatengineers.com/engforum/index.php?showtopic=4847&hl=1175th#entry24101

My father has found a few more papers in a box in the attic that has the names of the soldiers on the photos I posted. Any of the names sound familiar to anybody?

1st LT Abram L. Greene

T Sgt Henry O. Perseghetti

S Sgt William H. Slough

Tec 5 Francis J. Ryan

Tec 5 David O. Swanson

Cpl William N. Bracken

These papers were dated Sept. 1944 and March 1945 from Headquarters 1175th engineer Combat Group and 74th AAA Gun Battalion so ranks may have changed again but I though I would add them in case they rang a bell with anyone.

Dan

Hmmmm, found this link which lists a few dozen engineer units, including the 1175th. Looks like they have some documentation, but now I need to narrow it down and find out WHERE this STUFF is:

Let me do some digging here...

Okay, here's the mailing address of the site above, which listed the materials for the 1175th. I would write to them.

Tell them about the page on their site and what was listed within:

Please note: You or anyone else looking for info on various engineer units, can also contact several sources to obtain info, including the Army Corps of Engineers, in Virginia. Please see the following post in my Research section -

Included in this topic, are ways to obtain a vet's discharge papers. Note: NARA in St Louis is only ONE way. I obtained my dad's from his local VA in Michigan...

You are very, very welcome, Brian. Always happy to assist! Let me know what happens.

I'd try the state VA to get a hold of his discharge papers. You can also try the county where he was living when he returned from the war too. Most G.I.'s filed a copy when they got back to the states.

Hi Brian, the 1175th Engineer Combat Group was organized about 1 January 1945 by the Delta Base Section at Marsielle, France from disbanded Anti Aircraft Battalions. It`s most likely your grandfather was first with one of the disbanded units from `42 until reassignment to the 1175th.

From the records of Delta Base Section:

"The 1175th Engineer Combat Group with the 367th, 369th, and 370th Engineer Combat Battalions were activated from the the 106th AAA Headquaters Group: 406th, 215th, and 74th AAA Gun Battalions and a cadre from 7th Army. A twelve (12) week training was started 8 January 1945. The training program is designed to provide units with Combat Engineer Training in preparation for an operational role as Combat Engineers."
