Marion I am sure Joe is describing the explosion that took place in 1944 at the US 228th American Hospital built by combat engineers in 1943 near Sherborne, Dorset. I visited Sherborne in 2005 and met with Mrs Jean Treasure who was a civillian working for the US military at the hospital. I also posted an article on this website at that time about the accident and the commemorative plaque dedicated to those killed, sited at Sherborne Abbey.
