This is an amazing story---mostly of the cover-up. There is a good book out about this.
the U.S. commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Gen. Alfred M. Guenther
During the war, Major-Gen. Guenther was Chief of Staff for General Mark Clark and his 5th Army. He served as Clark's assistant for all those years and then had a successful career after the war.
