I would be willing bet you a lot of money that we weren't a half mile off
the British coast on the way to France and there wasn't a gas mask to
be found. Most of them became an ersatz mussette bag for the GIs until
they even threw those away. I can honestly say we heard very little about
the use of gas by the Krauts.
The only award that was prominent was the CIB - the rest were secondary.
Our Plt. LT. set a great example - he was the first to throw his mask away.
I guess I should have said this was on June 14,1944 to be more precise.
