Sunk off the Norwegian island of Fedje in 1945, the German sub U-864 has steadily seeped mercury into the surrounding waters, to the dismay of local fishing villages. Now the government plans literally to cover up the issue. Raising the wreck would pose too great a danger of further contamination, so the Norwegian Coastal Administration has recommended covering the sub with absorbent sand and then encasing the site in fill - burial at sea!
