I would be willing bet you a lot of money that we weren't a half mile off

the British coast on the way to France and there wasn't a gas mask to

be found. Most of them became an ersatz mussette bag for the GIs until

they even threw those away. I can honestly say we heard very little about

the use of gas by the Krauts.

The only award that was prominent was the CIB - the rest were secondary.

Our Plt. LT. set a great example - he was the first to throw his mask away.

I guess I should have said this was on June 14,1944 to be more precise.

In 1943 there were no gas mask thrown away, it was only late in the war, June 1944, that we finally decided that they were passe. AL

I amended my original post to include that I was speaking of June 14,1944 when

we were on the way to Utah Beach.

Sorry if I confused the point

Speaking of uniforms, perhaps one of the Vets can answer this question for me. Did you ever see any American GI's (not Marines) wearing ANY issued camo uniform pieces in the ETO? I know that in the Pacific they were issued to both US Marines and US Army.

Still wonderin'

Dogdaddy

PS- Sgt. Saunders on Combat does not count!

None in No. Africa or Italy. they wouldn't be worth a damn up in the mountains. Green fatigues in the summer, woolens summer and winter. Fatigue jacket and woolen sweater issued. Rocky Hey Sgtleo you were with the elite, weren't you? Your combat boots were finished leather where you could polish them, huh?

Hey when I read the question about camo, it made me remember a post in the Combat the TV series. See link and then the date starting April 11, 2005.
