Marion:

Thanks for prompting me about the new information concerning the 39th Engineers on the forum. It was most interesting. Most of the time-frame was after Major L.C. O'Neal was killed. He died Nov. 7,1943 .

Seeing Stan Dziuban's name on your email reminded me that I had not told you of my hearing from him concerning L.C. O'Neal.

After seeing the announcement on your site about the scheduled reunion of the 39th, I wrote to Mr. and Mrs. Knudson. I gave them the information on Major O'Neal and asked them to ask the men attending the reunion to contact me if they had served with Major O'Neal.

Soon after the reunion, I received a very interesting letter from Colonel Dziuban with his comments on his service with him. Enclosed he sent a photograph of a group including Major O'Neal taken at the end of the campaign in Sicily in August 1943. The photo included several others including Herman Shirley, The Chaplain, Colonel Green and others who had written to Mrs. O'Neal after his death. We still have some of these letters.

When Mr. Dziuban's letter came to me, I saw the photo and handed it to my wife without comment. She screamed with joy!! She has seen very few photos of her father since he left to go overseas in Dec. 1942 when she was 8 years old. That photo is now one of her most precious possessions.

After the initial letter, Colonel Dziuban went on line and read my account on your site. He wrote me again and sent additional information from the 5th Army Engineers history about the 39th. He also mentioned having been in the area when Dr. O'Neal was killed.

I have written both the Knudsen's and Colonel Dziuban to express our gratitude for their response to my inquiry. I must also thank you for helping me reach these through your site. This contact has meant so much to my wife and our children. Our son is named for his Grandfather O'Neal and is especially interested in any information about him.

Here are a few photos of my husband's fatherWill/ Lee dad's was a pilot who began training during WW2. He also served in Korea.

I will have more soon.

This collage shows Will in the backyard of his home in Detroit in 1945, which later became our house. The two little kids are family cousins, Roger and Nancy. The photo showing a headshot of a man in uniform is unknown at this time, but was found amongst dad's photos this week.

  RABIES
Posted by: Cadetat6 - 11-15-2005, 03:27 PM - Forum: The Papa Art Section! - Replies (1)

11/14/2005 - KIRKUK AIR BASE, Iraq (AFPN) -- Against the backdrop of a rising sun, a small group of Airmen make their way stealthily around the in search of the enemy.

Team of pest management technicians -- from the 506th Expeditionary Civil Engineers Squadron -- traps and deterrence are a daily task as they try to reduce the amount of stray animals roaming freely here.

The stray animal population does present a deadly threat to humans because they may have rabies, said Tech. Sgt. Stacy Wallett, a pest management technician deployed here from McConnell Air Force Base, Kan.

Within the last month a dog captured on the base tested positive for the rabies virus, said Army Capt. (Dr.) Kristie Souders, officer in charge of the 72nd Medical Detachment veterinary clinic. She’s deployed here from Giebelstadt, Germany.

“The big thing people should keep in mind is that (Kirkuk residents) don’t keep dogs as pets,†she said.

One Arab cultural specialist agrees.

Capt. Matthew Ence, a foreign affairs officer for 9th Air Force at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., said in many Arab countries dogs and cats are seen as little more than pests. He said it would be rare for a middle income Arab family to keep one as a pet inside their home.

The CDC reports that worldwide, exposure to rabid dogs is still the cause of more than 90 percent of human exposure to rabies and causes more than 99 percent of the human deaths annually.

In the case of the rabid dog caught here, Dr. Souders said, it “acted like it wanted to be played with, then it turned on them.â€

“Once it affects their brain, it will change,†she said. “You can’t predict how they are going to act.†.

“If you get bit, and you don’t report it, and you get rabies, you will die,†said Maj. (Dr.) John Harrah, director of emergency services for the 506th Expeditionary Medical Squadron. He’s deployed from Eglin Air Force Base, Fla.

Here, General Order 1A, which applies to all assigned military, specifically prohibits “adopting as pets or mascots, caring for or feeding any type of domestic or wild animal.â€

And yet, the risky and illegal behavior continues.

“We found a place where someone appeared to have set up a feeding station for the local canine population,†said Tech. Sgt. Bruce Gazaway, a pest management technician deployed from Kulis Air National Guard Base, Alaska.

The sergeant said the “well-intentioned Good Samaritan†actually endangered everyone around them by attracting stray dogs to the area.

“They just aren’t thinking,†he said.

  WWII DOCUMENTARIES ON DVD
Posted by: afc7883 - 11-12-2005, 04:38 PM - Forum: TV Shows, Film, Videos - Replies (75)

I must confess to spending a great portion of my time watching documentaries about WWII, and I doubt there are many that I do not already own. I have listed a few that I would highly recommend if you are starting to collect them.

(1.) THE WORLD AT WAR 11 dvd set with over 26 hours, narrated by Sir Lawrence Olivier......A "must" for your collection!

(2.) WWII THE WAR IN EUROPE, with Walter Kronkite 3 dvds, over 11 hours. In depth look at both fronts (eastern and western) as well as previously unseen footage of the Warsaw uprising and other Partisan actions filmed by the freedom fighters themselves.

(3.) THE COLOR OF WAR, HISTORY CHANNEL..SETS #1 AND #2. Narrated by Peter Coyote, great color (real color, not "colorised") footage of AMERICAN troops. Covers everything from Basic Training to the War's end, and really taps into the feelings of our boys "Over There." 7 dvds

(4.) D-DAY, 60TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATIVE EDITION 3-DVDS. Many Veteran interviews including Sgt. Leonard Lomell, 2nd Ranger Battalion, and major Dick Winters, 101rst Airborne.

(5) ROLLING THUNDER, THE STORY OF THE 3RD ARMORED DIV., FROM THE HISTORY CHANNEL. EXCELLENT chronicle of the famous "Spearhead Division" from WWII to Iraq. 1 dvd.

Okay, that'll do for starters. I could go on forever, as I am addicted to watching this great historical programs and discussing them with others afterward. Please feel free to add to my list! I must confess another thing....I am a "homer" when it comes to who's accounts I prefer, and I don't enjoy any that belittle American Commanders or Soldiers! :drinkin:
