Some Like It Cold! ~ Muskegon M1 for Vets Match

While many in Michigan huddled in their homes to stay out of the bitter cold, a record number of shooters attended the Muskegon Pistol and Rifle Club's first M1 for Vets match held on Saturday, December 9, 2006.

  Veterans Saluting the Flag
Posted by: Walt's Daughter - 08-05-2007, 05:06 PM - Forum: ALL Vets News - No Replies

Just received this info from my Korean vet friend, Jack Reissman. He got this from a friend of his.

=============

Veterans Salute

Legislation Allows Veterans to Salute the Flag.

All,

Just thought that I would pass on new legislation clarifying allowing Veterans and service members not in uniform to salute the flag. This may seem like a small change, but I will now render a smart hand salute to the flag during all appropriate public events. I would ask you to pass this on to any current service members or Veteran.

Inhofe Legislation Allows Veterans to Salute the Flag.

Ryan Cassin, 07.26.2007

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) today praised the passage by unanimous consent of his bill (S.1877) clarifying U.S. law to allow veterans and servicemen not in uniform to salute the flag. Current law (US Code Title 4, Chapter 1) states that veterans and servicemen not in uniform should place their hand over their heart without clarifying whether they can or should salute the flag.

"The salute is a form of honor and respect, representing pride in one's military service," Senator Inhofe said. "Veterans and service members continue representing the military services even when not in uniform. "Unfortunately, current U.S. law leaves confusion as to whether veterans and service members out of uniform can or should salute the flag. My legislation will clarify this regulation, allowing veterans and servicemen alike to salute the flag, whether they are in uniform or not.

"I look forward to seeing those who have served saluting proudly at baseball games, parades and formal events. I believe this is an appropriate way to honor and recognize the 25 million veterans in the United States who have served in the military and remain as role models to others citizens. Those who are currently serving or have served in the military have earned this right, and their recognition will be an inspiration to others."

  Malaria in the ETO
Posted by: Walt's Daughter - 08-05-2007, 03:15 PM - Forum: ANYTHING WWII - Replies (22)

Received a question from a gentleman today and thought I would post this and my response, so all can benefit and join in too, if they wish:

================

I thank one of our KW vets for leading me to this excellent

resource on malaria in the Korean War era:

http://history.amedd.army.mil/booksdocs/KO...ecad2/ch6-2.htm

It was very helpful.

I wonder... any of you who were fighting in Europe in WW2 (or

researching that war) ever hear of malaria there? I doubt it,

as in all the 15 years I've been going to Europe each summer, I

think I've seen only one or two mosquitoes. I know it was a problem in the Pacific theater.

=================

Malaria was quite prevalent in WWII and not just in the Pacific. This is well-documented and I've many personal stories from my VI Corps vets. Malaria was particularly virulent in North Africa as well as Sicily and Italy.

Here are some instances from my forum, that discuss both theaters and personal accounts.

Here a just a FEW links that discuss malaria in the ETO:

A thousand get well wishes to one of my very best friends, Al Kincer of the 48th Combat Engineers. Al has been under the weather with pneumonia. I've had it and it ain't NO fun! :armata_PDT_23:

Take care of yourself Al. Get plenty of sleep, lots of liquids, and many hugs from your wife. I know she is taking very good care of you.
