  Autumn 2008
Posted by: Walt's Daughter - 10-13-2008, 06:30 AM - Forum: Our "VI Corps Family" Photos - No Replies

What a beautiful year for color here in Michigan. This weekend we spent a few hours on Sat and Sun, driving around and enjoying the gorgeous days. In the 70's, and sunny. Unfortunately on Saturday, I forgot my camera. IDIOT!!! Sunday I managed to get a few at a friend's outdoor reception, so I thought I would share them with you.

Our friends' daughter got married a few weeks ago, and they had a small reception for family. Yesterday's celebration was for friends at their house. They couldn't have asked for a better day. Thought you guys would love the one of Ralph with the chain saw. Hey, the cake was a little tough! :P A photo of my hubby too!

The last photo was taken down Rau Road. Always a great spot for viewing!

  words to live by...

Sent to me by Al Panebianco. It is so nice I am going to pin it here, so it won't disappear. When you need a little uplift from time to time, come here, read this and rejuvenate!

1. Take a 10-30 minute walk every day. And while you walk, smile. It is the ultimate anti-depressant.

2. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day.. Buy a lock if you have to.

3.. Buy a DVR and tape your late night shows and get more sleep.

4. When you wake up in the morning complete the following statement, 'My purpose is to ___ today.'

5. Live with the 3 E's -- Energy, Enthusiasm, and Empathy.

6. Play more games and read more books than you did in 2007.

7. Make time to practice meditation, yoga, tai chi, and prayer. They provide us with daily fuel for our busy lives.

8. Spend time with people over the age of 70 and under the age of 6.

9. Dream more while you are awake.

10. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants.

11. Drink green tea and plenty of warm water. Eat blueberries, wild Alaskan salmon, broccoli, almonds & walnuts.

12. Try to make at least three people smile each day.

13. Clear clutter from your house, your car, your desk and let new and flowing energy into your life.

14. Don't waste your precious energy on gossip, energy vampires, issues of the past, negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.

15. Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.

16. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a college kid with a maxed out charge card.

17. Smile and laugh more. It will keep the energy vampires away.

18. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

19. Life is too short to spend time hating anyone.

20. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

21. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

22. Make peace with your past so it won't spoil the present.

23. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

24. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.

25. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: 'In five years, will this matter?'

26. Forgive everyone for everything.

27. What other people think of you is none of your business.

28. GOD heals almost everything.

29. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

30. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.

31. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.

32. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

33. The best is yet to come.

34. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

35. Do the right thing!

36. Call your family often.

37. Each night before you go to bed complete the following statements: I am thankful for _____. Today I accomplished _____.

38. Remember that you are too blessed to be stressed.

39. Enjoy the ride. Remember this is not Disney World and you certainly don't want a fast pass. You only have one ride through life so make the most of it and enjoy the ride.

40. May your troubles be less, May your blessings be more, May nothing but happiness come through your door!

Prewar letter from my Grandmother to her son
Posted by: arve - 10-10-2008, 04:38 PM - Forum: ANYTHING WWII - Replies (1)

This letter from my grandmother to her son Francis was written 67 yrs ago on Sunday.

Dad was taking part in the Carolina manuevars & expected to be discharged from the army as an "older fellow" in Dec 1941.

I thought you might get a kick out of seeing it. My grandmother was born in Co Clare Ireland in 1880 and had only a 6th grade education but she had lovely handwriting.

This letter is also intriguing from an ancestry research standpoint because my grandmother mentions a Francis Davenport who must've been a relation (her mother my grt grandmother was Eilis Davenport). I had no clue that there were any Davenport relations here in the US.

She wrote: Dear Francis, Two weeks today you went down, from now on I hope the time will go by quickly down there. I see by the paper the water is pretty scarce, we have not

had any rain for a month but once that was last friday, it rained all day. Miss Fiske ( a school teacher my father had) called me to say she had a letter from you saying what you intended to do. She thought it best and said - he will get his discharge allright. I see by this morning's paper, the fellows from Devens are on their way down there. Mary (Dad's sister), Betty Drummond, & Shirley went up to Groton this morning in Betty's car, and they stopped at the gates, but nobody was let in. I saw Francis Davenport last week, also Mary saw Marion Curry - she is fine, also Jimmie. He is working at the hospital and is as spry as a kitten. Pat Hagerty was married this morning. Eleanor L. told Mary that Mrs. Carman, the Aunt, was not invited to the reception atall (I can hear the brogue in this bit of gossip). Francis Davenport's son is

down in Texas, he has not been home but once since he went there. Everyone here is fine. Things are going along about the same. The next Draft won't come until January.

Love from all at home

Ma

Lee and I just finished watching Miracle at Midnight. A very inspiring story, and one I think everyone here would enjoy and benefit from.

Lee rented it from Netflix. It was made-for-TV movie. Here is some info about it.
