  Son of a 393d Engineer S.S. vet
Posted by: Adamitis - 09-21-2016, 10:36 PM - Forum: Introduce Yourself! - Replies (12)

I am trying to find out about my father's military service. My children and grandchildren have asked questions I cannot answer about his military duties during WW II. Dad would rarely speak of the war.

His name was James E. Phillips from San Diego California army serial number 39282202 on his separation paperwork is JAMES E. PHILLIPS 39 282 202 Technician Fourth Grade 393d Engineer Special Services Regiment. He separated at Camp Clairborne Louisiana 13 November 1945.

He is listed in the roster of the burgundy book of the 393d that I have seen on line. I also believe in the picture of Company "C" he is in the front row all the way to the end of the row on the viewer's right. I have the jacket they are all wearing hanging in my closet, it was dad's jacket. I am just starting my search so in advice or info would be appreciated.

Thank you

Jack Phillips

So a great many people (judging by posts I've read) loved Picasa Web Albums. Unfortunately, Google killed it and is no longer supporting its client-side program, Picasa3. Unfortunately, Picasa Web Albums is how I had all of my old pictures posted here on the site. It was simple and worked exceedingly well, which, I suppose, is why they decided to get rid of it.

So the problem is that when I go to Google Photos now, select the picture I want and grab the link for the photo, it no longer works on the forum. Actually, the odd thing is the image I want shows up in the preview, but I get a warning that says "You are not allowed to use that image extension on this community."

Using the right click and "copy image address" had worked as late April on your birthday (http://www.6thcorpscombatengineers.com/engforum/index.php?showtopic=8407) but Google must have changed how they create links to the stored images.

Now when I do that the link looks like this:

It doesn't have .jpg on the end, which I guess is the problem. Very sad indeed.

  German Boy

I was in the Udvar-Hazy Center last Saturday (the Air And Space Museum by Dulles Airport) and I had the good fortune to meet Wolfgang W. E. Samuel. He is the author of German Boy and several other books. German Boy is an autobiographical story of his life in NAZI Germany (he was 10 when the story begins toward the end of the war) and during the Soviet occupation. I have just started the book so I don't have much of a review yet, but it looks great. Later in life, he came to America and served as a pilot with the USAF from 1965 through 1985 and retired as a colonel. He has many other books and my wife and I picked up a couple while we were there. Unfortunately, I had German Boy at home so it is not signed!!

Conducting research - Edward W Lawson - Engineer
Posted by: Walt's Daughter - 09-09-2016, 10:50 AM - Forum: WWII ENGINEERS - Replies (18)

Marion Chard,

I have been using your forum to obtain information about the Combat Engineers during

WWII. Thank you for your dedication.

I am in my late 60's, but did not serve in the military. My brother a pilot, was a Captain in

the Navy, and retired after 30 years of service. My father served in the Navy in WWII as a

Seabee, Carpenters Mate 3rd Class. He was a diver, both shallow and deep water. He was

in the Naval Construction Battalion Detachment #1009, on Banika Island, Russell, Islands,

South Pacific. The unit operated the Landing Craft Repair Base No. 2. My father never

discussed his service with me or my siblings. I have spend a lot of time rebuilding his training

times in Virginia and California and the trail to the LCRB No. 2. We now have a good picture

of his service, before he came back and finished his engineering degree.

My mother-in-law's first husband Edward Lawson, was in the Army Corp of Engineers. He

was KIA in March, 1945. They were divorced in mid 1942. We have attempted to research

his service but we received many letters back from various military records sites, that there is

no record. This month we did discover that the family has a half sister, Ed Lawson had

remarried in 1943 in Newport News, NJ. We contacted the half sister and have good

relations with her. She and her mom were not notified of Edward's death, but found out when

his letters stopped. The army denied benefits to them, because he was married to someone

else. This just made me dig further, but still not much luck.

2nd Lt. Edward William Lawson born 3 Mar 1916, died 27 Mar 1945. He is buried in

Arlington National Cemetery. On his Interment papers, he was returned with WWII Dead

Program from St. Avold-Metz France in 1949. the papers state that he was U.S. AGF - 345

Engrs. A colored pencil note on the record states " C o C, 10 Engr. Ba., WWII Corps of

Engrs. We do find mention of Edward in the Diary of Chick Bruns - 70 Years Ago. Edward is

listed on the Territory of Alaska WWII Army Casualties. His enlistment shows as Seattle,

Wa, but all Alaska enlistments show as Washington.

Our family and two living children of Edward's first marriage live in Alaska, so going to the

records is very difficult.

We can find no records related to 345 - Engrs.

Joining your forum hopefully with help in learning more about the WWII history of Corp of

Engineers.

Thank you,

Willet Bushnell

I am conducting research for Willet and will post anything I find within this topic. Just getting started this morning....
