Also, I hope to bring a website online about the 125th soon. Right now though all I have is the book as well as the 14th's history book so if anyone has anything they can share that would be great.

I've adopted the 14th AD and have brought many websites online about their individual units. I found a copy of this online via the military library:

    Download and enjoy.

One of his buddies from the 285th told me that William was a NYC Firefighter and also quite involved with the 285th's reunions so maybe one of those things is where you may know him from?

I just recently received a photo of the CP that was hit by the V-2 on 17 March 1945. It was a three story building and what you see is the building all collasped into the basement. You can see the smoke rising from the bomb just behind the house and in the upper left you can see the guys starting to search for those buried under the rubble. Unreal....

Just goes to show luck (fortune, whatever) plays a large part in war. The most training and badassery in the world can't help you when you are attending a meeting and a V-2 makes an unwanted appearance. My grandfather told a story of a similar story in Anzio. He left a tent (billeting, I think) and minutes later it was blown up. Not sure if it was aerial bombs or Anzio Anne, but it was gone and several of his mates were dead. He just missed it by a little. Fortunately for me (and my 4 aunts and uncles that were born after he returned), he had somewhere else to be.

Proposal to make CAB retroactive to WWII. This will substitute the CIB and deprive the BSM to no doubt thousands of WWII veterans who are entitled the CIB according to applicable guidelines.

    http://www.military.com/daily-news/2014/12/18/pentagon-could-make-combat-action-badge-retroactive-to-world-war.html?comp=1198882887570&rank=1

Several points I would like to share…

Rep. Richard Nugent, R-Florida, has filed legislation for retroactive CAB authorization for several years, even making it tax-neutral by requiring those who might be approved for the medal to purchase it directly from the supplier.

The House adopted his bills but the Senate has balked.

"I've never gotten a good explanation for why the Senate is so opposed to it. “
Attempted to explain to his office the answer.

    >The Combat Infantryman Badge dates to World War II and has been awarded to soldiers bearing the infantry MOS in all subsequent wars and campaigns.

Another mistake...the MOS was not required until 1951. Since discovering such injustice, I telephoned Rep. Richard Nugent (FL) who introduced legislation for the CAB. Attempted to give the answer but it was a waste of time...

Army combatants who fought during the campaign were under War Department Circulars 269 and 105 retroactive on or after 6 December 1941 that did not mention MOS and/or unit assignment. Combat Infantryman Badge may be awarded to any infantryman.

Telephoned Senators McCain and Flake, but also a waste of time since I have no family member involved. Not able to change the course. Someone must give a try by contacting their Representative(s) of Congress.

For combatants who fought the enemy after 17 October 1944, particularly the Battle of the Bulge come under WDC 408, dated 17 October 1944 effective 1 November 1944. It does not require MOS of an infantryman, but requires the individual to be assigned to an infantry unit.

Discovered a variety of possessed MOS's personnel held who were awarded the CIB according to guidelines.

Thanks Todd. It's nice to be able to talk to someone about it. Ya, taking it pretty hard. I was fine this morning until I read your post and then it all comes flooding back, but that's okay.

Funny thing, I keep scanning Gmail to see if he wrote today. That's going to take a long time to get used to.

For the last several years, I make sure to keep all the emails from the guys. I archive them, for they are all so precious. It's warming to go back and open a few every now and then. Comforting.

Oh Marion, I know this is a hard one for you. I had been visiting my folks in Dallas (first time in 3 years) for the last 12 days so I hadn't checked in to the forum lately. When I checked just now, this was the first topic I saw and my heart went out to you. I know how close you two and that this would be one of the hardest of all. My thoughts and prayers go out to you, Jim, and all those who will feel his loss.

    Jim, rest well, sir.

Wow, this is one of the toughest ones yet.

Many of you knew Jim, since he was also a forum member. He was one of my earliest contacts, when I started my website. Words will not suffice. How do you wrap someone up in a few simple paragraphs? You can't!

Sigh! I was out celebrating my birthday, when news arrived from "Jimbeau", one of Jim's sons, that Jim had passed away. Oh, what a shock! It was unexpected and sudden. I had just responded to one of his emails, the day before. While I was very sad and broke out into tears, I couldn't help to think about Jim's great sense of humor, and looked up to the sky, saying, "Nice going Jim, you passed away on my birthday, just to ensure that I would never forget you!" Trust me, he was looking down at me with that big grin on his face. That was who he was.

Words cannot express my sense of loss, for we were very close and wrote to each other all the time. He would send me pics of himself, enjoying simple, everyday moments like eating pizza. Cute!

My life will be a lonelier place without you my friend, but it was also a richer one, because of you. Love ya forever! M

    Obituary

My loving condolences to his entire family! Special shout-out to his son "Jimbeau", who kept in constant contact. You are definitely your father's son! I look forward to our continued friendship and correspondence. Please send my love to your mother.

The 14th AD's website has been offline for a little bit. I "adopted" it and have brought it back online at a new URL (I couldn't get the old url). I hope that someone from their association will want to take it back over eventually. I brought it back online just as it was, I have not edited it in any way. Anyway, since there are many links to it in this thread I wanted to let you all know that it is now located at:

It is a shame that Ancestry is so expensive. It seems to me if they lowered their prices a bit they'd have a lot more users. I will say that it has been a vital tool in my research on the 284th....but yeah I can only swing another month or two of it and then I'm going to have to let it go for a while...
