Have you ever heard of Sadhu Sundar Singh? Probably not, but I would like to send you a link to a sample of his readings with your permission. I think you would enjoy it as a person with a spiritual leaning. BTW...he was a Christian :-)

    Real meaning of Memorial Day

Sad to say, but I can't think of one single Holiday in this country that bears any resemblance to what they meant when I was growing up...can you? Kids don't even have to recite the pledge of allegiance in school anymore, but that's not the kids fault. MEMORIAL DAY God Bless all you Veterans who died in combat, and never lived to raise kids or become a grandfather/mother. You were too young to vote, and too young to even take a legal drink of alcohol in the country you died defending. I promise never to forget you, both the young and the old..... for your ultimate sacrifice.

    Buchenwald Liberation

I responded to Ken's email yesterday through my personal email address
  12. Hi Gang, I wanted to share this photo with you. I'm sure you will recognize the face of the little boy if you've ever watched a documentary about the Liberation of Buchanwald. It came from the estate of the GI who took the photo, who wrote the description on the back. Dogdaddy

    Happy VE Day !!

I always hear from my friend Max in the Ukraine on May 9th, as that is the day that the Soviets had their own surrender in 1945. Today I got an email saying that he will not attend this year's Victory celebration since the new Pro-Russian government has decreed that the Red flag should be displayed this year with the blue and white flag of Ukraine. V-E Day is still cause for celebration in the USA and the nations in Europe that were freed from Nazi occupation.

    Women in Combat

My first post to this topic was entirely in jest and I hope nobody took it literally. I've had mixed feelings about allowing women to fight as infantry, artillery and so on, and probably for many of the same reasons as many. Growing up as a child of the WWII generation I was taught about all the things women shouldn't or can't do. Times have changed (duh!)and I've had to modify many of my long held beliefs, as women have proved me wrong. I'm trying hard not to allow this post to become a novel, so I'll get to the point. Speaking as a civilian I do not think it's right to deny women the right to fight anymore if they have completed the required training and have the desire to serve in combat alongside their "Brothers." I will continue to wish they decide not to...especially if they are also Mothers, but I believe women have proved time and again that they are both physically and emotionally capable of performing the same tasks as men and it's wrong to deny them the opportunity to fight if they wish to.

    Women in Combat

Anyone who thinks Women can't fight has never been married!
  18. How do you know when Easter is coming?...At least 2 cable TV channels are broadcasting shows that attempt to discredit the Bible. Although I like A&E's programming normally, they really anger me when they start showing Anti-Christian programs a week before a major Christian Holiday...it never fails. Already listened to one TV host ask a minister if he thought that "the stories about Christ rising from the dead are meant to be taken only symbolically." I have nothing against the Easter Bunny and/or Santa Claus for that matter, but attempting to sow doubt about The Bible each time a Christian Holy Day approaches is really no-class... IMHO. Can you imagine what would happen if a network broadcast programs that cast doubt about Islam??? He has Risen...Happy Easter!

    EVERYMAN'S WAR

I would like to recommend renting on Netflix a great movie titled "Everyman's War". This movie was made by Oregon Filmmaker Thad Smith and his screenwriter brother Craig, to honor their father's real-life legacy and involvement in The Battle of The Bulge. This is a small independent movie and one of the very best I've ever had the pleasure of watching. It is the true story of Don Smith, a soldier that served in the 94th Infantry Division in WWII and was wounded during the battle of The Bulge. I liked this movie in particular because the focus was on one man's experience rather than just another movie about the Bulge. I rented it from Netflix,so I don't know if it's available in most DVD rental places, but it's really a GREATmovie! (Nigel gives it two paws up!)

    What happenned to Spring?

This has got to be the only forcast that was ever accurate. They predicted a longer and colder than normal Winter here in the Pacific Northwest. Even the poor birds were confused when we started having some nice days in late February and they came home too early! I noticed some cherry blossoms today, but that doesn't mean it won't snow tomorrow!

    Huston S. "Hu" Riley

Hi Folks, Glad you liked the post. I did manage to screw up one more thing besides double posting: His nickname is "Hu" , not "Hi". I misread his handwriting. Oh boy.....

    Huston S. "Hi" Riley

Probably all of you have seen this famous photo of a GI hugging Omaha Beach for cover on June 6th, 1944. For more than sixty years he remained unidentified. His name is Huston S. Riley, who was a PFC with the First Infantry Division, who came ashore with the first wave on Fox Green Beach that morning. He now lives on Mercer Island..a suburb of Seattle Washington. Ever since this story broke in 2007 I have been meaning to write him a letter to thank him and the other men he served with for what they did for our country and for the people of Europe. Since he lives here in Washington state it was not difficult to find his mailing address, so after I went through the mental process of "should I or shouldn't I" try to contact him I decided a short letter would probably not be invading his privacy. I also squirreled up the courage to ask him for a signed copy of that famous photograph, and just 4 days later (today) I received a happy surprise in my mailbox, which I am sharing with you now :-)
