Tuesday, March 14, 2006 2:37 PM MST

A funeral service for Martin Luther Schofield, 84, was held at 10 a.m. March 2, 2006, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, with Pastor Mike Struck officiating.

Interment was at Oregon Trail State Veterans’ Cemetery, with military rites accorded by the Natrona County United Veterans’ Council and the Wyoming Army National Guard.

Mr. Schofield died Feb. 27, 2006, at the Wyoming Medical Center from complications of diabetes. He was born Aug. 3, 1921, at the family home in Midland, S.D., to Harry C. and Flossie Belle (Shawl) Schofield.

He lost his mother at the age of 7, and grew up with his father and brothers and sisters on the ranch, while attending a nearby country school.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army on Sept. 7, 1942, and discharged Nov. 3, 1945, serving on the European front. He returned to the ranch work that he loved.

On June 14, 1948, he married Edith Fosheim. The couple had five children.

Mr. Schofield continued working on ranches and served as town marshal in Midland until 1968. The family then moved to Evansville, where he worked in construction.

He also worked for a time as the town marshal in Evansville. He served as a security guard at First Interstate Bank in Casper and later worked for the City of Casper, in parks, streets and meter maintenance. He retired in 1982.

The family moved to Billings, where they lived for 10-1/2 years, and later moved to Tucson, Ariz., for 2-1/2 years. In 1995, they moved back to Evansville, where the family still resides.

Mr. Schofield was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was a hard-working man who loved horses, rodeo and country western music. His children were his pride and joy, and he loved spending time with his grandkids and great-grandkids. He will be remembered for his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor.

Survivors include his wife; five children, Suzanne Schofield of Evansville, Marvin (Lucy) Schofield of Medicine Bow, George (Missy) Schofield of Gillette, Brenda (Wayne) Balben of Casper, and James Schofield of Evansville; 10 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 12 brothers and two sisters.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Price of Peace Lutheran Church Building Fund or Reach for a Rising Star Academy to help the disabled.

Bustard’s Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of arrangements.
