Trier Germany & the Saar-Moselle Triangle - EngineerReenactor - 02-13-2014

I would like to hear from anyone that shares my interests. I want to use this form/message board to exchange information and the history (Feb.- Mar. 1945) of these engineer units.

- 55th Armored Engineer Battalion, 10th Armored Division

- 87th Engineer Heavy Pontoon Battalion

- 135th Engineer Combat Battalion

- 179th Engineer Combat Battalion

- 206th Engineer Combat Battalion

- 245th Engineer Combat Battalion

- 319th Engineer Combat Battalion, 94th Infantry Division

- 548th Light Pontoon Company

- 623rd Light Equipage Company

- 993rd Treadway Bridge Company

- 997th Treadway Bridge Company

- 1139th Engineer Combat Group, US Army XX Corps

My uncle, 1st Lt. William N. Fudge died on 6 April 1945 while with the 10th Armored Division. He was a platoon commander in the 609th Tank Destroyer Battalion. My main focus is the XX Corps operation to capture Trier Germany and the Saar-Moselle Triangle. An ongoing research project is the Saar River crossings during Mar-Feb. 1945. These 12 engineer units jointly conducted; four assault boat crossing sites, completed seven pontoon bridges and another treadway bridge was abandoned due to never ending German artillery fire. Independent engineer units were constantly reassigned form one Army Corp to another. Some of these units listed as XX Corps were also attached to VI Corps at one time. The amount of man power, skill sets, specialized equipment and vehicles it took to 'bridge a river' is not known by the typical WWII buff. In my sometime to be published book, I will explain how these herculean efforts were accomplished to cross the Saar River in the region of Trier Germany.

Hello Duayne!

I am very interested in your research! And I will order your book as soon as you say I can preorder it!

I am extremely interested in the history of that area - not only during WW2 but at other times. My genealogical research led me to Trier and that whole region. I had ancestors that moved there. The records in Trier were great.

I have collected some strange things on that area - regrettably buried deep in a storage unit - but safe. Not much will refer to WW2 - maybe one book written in German but probably published in the 1980's and not a scholarly type book.

Gosh, I am so excited to think that finally I can learn more about Trier and the Saar Moselle area during WW2.

Thank you for your efforts in unraveling the history and stories and preserving them for generations to come! i can't wait to learn more!

Jean
