Donald L. Burkhart, 307 Engineer Battalion - Marcel - 05-27-2012

I am searching for information about Sergeant Donald L. Burkhart (35044487), 307 Engineer Battalion, 82 Airborne Division. He is buried at Margraten, The Netherlands. His date of death is 21 june 1945.

I always thought Margraten was a cemetery for American soldiers who died in The Netherlands during WW II, but i guess there are also some soldiers buried there who died in Germany and/or Belgium.

Or was the 307 Battalion in The Netherlands when Burkhart died?

Marcel,

As far as I know the deceased was returned to his hometown as many other american soldiers who were killed in WWII or later, and is now in Bowman, Pike County, near Petersburg:

In Margraten there will only the cross:

You know this page for sure. Why he was buried there is an interesting question because he died after the war when his division was already in Berlin as occupying forces. Maybe he has been injured at Market Garden? Petersburg is just a small town of 2383 (Wikipedia) inhabitants, some of them are Burkharts like one of the jailers at pike county sheriff's office, if you google a bit and write some e-mails, you might find some relatives of Doland L. Burkhardt there.

Please write here if you find more!

Christoph

Thank you very much Christoph.

The jailer is the son of a brother of Donald Burkhart. I have asked him for some more information about his uncle.

Unfortunately i haven't heard anything again from Don Burkhart after his first email in which he wrote his Uncle Donald L. Burkhart was the oldest of 6 children (4 boys an 2 girls), born to Roger and Naomi Burkhart of Pike County.

I have requested for the IDPF of Donald L. Burkhart.

I'm glad you finally received some information on Donald. It's sad to hear how he died, but at least you have some details, now.
