Yes, according the the serial number, he was a commissioned officer.

Right now after a brief search, I've come up with this, but cannot find a match to the serial number. Mind you, I just began, but have dinner going, so let me do a more thorough search tomorrow.

I had found this information on him and on his wife, but I had discarded it because it seemed impossible to me he could be in Italy and in the Arctic at the same time
