292nd Engineer Combat Battalion (New Member) - Sir Gator - 09-28-2016

Hello;

I am trying to find information on the 292nd Eng Combat Battalion CO A: I have seen various items but am confused if there was more than (1) Co A during WWII? I am sorry I am new to all of this.

My Grandfather (Edwin J Grosskurth) was a member of the battalion and my mother (his daughter) only has his discharge papers, and she would like very much to have more info. I have spent quite a while searching but his name does not come up in the national registry. I see photo's on this site but am not sure if he would be in these as I don't know how many Co A's there may have been during WWII.

If anyone can help I would be extremely grateful.

I am posting the only thing I do have and hope this will be enough to be pointed in the right direction, I am trying to get some kind of time line and understanding of what my grandfather would have done or been involved in so as to present her. I don't have a military photo like I see people display, hoping that I might find a picture of him through others.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Regards,

Martha

Martha,

Here is General Order #2 that lists your grandfather as having been awarded a Good Conduct Medal on March 28, 1945.

Randy,

My friend... never apologize for doing your best in trying to assist others. We all appreciate what you are doing and thank you for it. This is a huge step in the continuing effort to document the unit and the men who served in it. A free Google account will get you 15gb of free storage. With this you can upload the image and then post a link that allows access to the image of C Company to individuals or to anyone depending on your preference. As an example, here is a link to the A Company image from my Google Drive space:

Great job donating to the Camp Butner folks. They are fledgling and any assistance that can be provided is so important. An update on the Earl Haughton IDPF... well, after a year I got a hold of someone last week and was told the file was 24 pages, scanned and sitting in their system. Why it was not sent out is a mystery. I was told it would be sent out that afternoon or the next day. Knowing the volume of request they have, I gave them the rest of the week, but still have not seen it. I called back and left a message and am currently waiting for a call back. Clearly, patience is a virtue, but this is a bit frustrating. I will continue pursuing it and let you know as things start to move forward. Incidentally, the Charles Crawford IDPF should be available as soon as I get done wrestling with them about it. Randy, did you ever get a chance to put in a request for the IDPF for Millard Weaver who died on Jan 1, 1945? I received a document recently that leads me to believe that he died in some kind of accident (see note in Jan 6th entry of attached image).

We'll keep digging and our noses to the grindstone to continue to answer the questions we have. :)

Gary

Gary,

Thanks for the tip, a Google account is probably the way I will go with the Company C photo. I will try to get that set up here real quick for everybody to see.

I can certainly understand your frustration with the IDPF requests. I think the longest I had to wait for one was eleven months, you are correct that patience is a virtue when dealing with government machine. There just does not seem to be any method to their madness. If you can believe it the first one of these files I ever requested only took about three weeks to receive and that was back when they were burning them to CD and sending them by snail mail, go figure! Yes I had requested Millard Weaver's IDPF back in March, received confirmation of request and I am still waiting. We suspected previously that maybe he died from an accident and your document seems point to that effect, the IDPF should include the investigation that it speaks of.

The second entry for 6 JAN 1945 on your posted document mentions a possible demolition action. With my grandfather being a Demolition Specialist with the 292nd you can probably surmise my interest in this tidbit. I am very much looking forward to seeing the rest the General Orders that have been collected. Have a good one my friend,

Randy

Gary,

Really like the "line up" for our 292nd team you have made here, great job! One mistake I see is that Ralph Richardson is the son and not grandson, keep up the good work!

Gary;

Thank you for that....the first piece of information...YEAH!!..I will try and find a military picture to see if I can match it with the CO A photo I have seen on here. It would be great if he is in it. I just don't have a clear enough view of the one on here to be sure.

Just thought I'd upgrade you, my friend! :) Thanks for the clarification. You are correct as the document that he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal is listed as General Order #2. You are a man of men and a very good nephew! :)

Gary

Thanks Gary!

Martha,

If you can at least find one from the period in or out of service where you (or if you post it... we) can get a good look at his face from the era then you can use the following link to download the high res version of the image of the Company A photo:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5ghnJbeN7QkSU8xaFhSclRtOUE/view

Just be aware that the file is nearly 80 megabytes in size so is quite large. Thus, be patient when downloading. But, it should give you a very close view of the men's faces. If you have issues then just let me know. The file is a Tiff file so if by chance you can't read it then I'll upload a JPEG version which you will have no problem reading. Until next time... have a wonderful night! :)
