Memorial Day 2008 - Walt's Daughter - 05-22-2008

Since Memorial Day is a veteran's holiday, I decided to place it here instead of in the Shooting the Breeze category. Please post all you Memorial Day wishes, photos, rememberances, etc. in this spot.

I'll start off with a photo Jim Hennessey, 87th Inf Div, sent me. To the unknown soldiers!

Memorial Day 2008 - Walt's Daughter - 05-23-2008

Here's a poem John McAuliffe, 87th Inf Div, sent me. Thanks sir!

MEMORIAL DAY

The bugle echos shrill and sweet,

But not of war it sings today.

The road is rhythmic with the feet

Of men at-arms who come to pray.

The roses bloom white and red

On Tombs where weary soldiers lie;

Flags wave round the honored dead

And martial music cleaves the sky.

Above these wreath - strewn graves we kneel,

They kept the faith and fought the fight.

Through flying lead and crimson steel,

They plunged for freedom and the right.

May we, their grateful children, learn

Their strength, who lie beneath this sod,

Who went through fire and death to earn

At last the accolade of God.

In shining rank on rank arrayed

They march, the legions of the Lord;

He is their Captain unafraid,

The Prince of Peace...who brought a sword.

Memorial Day 2008 - Walt's Daughter - 05-23-2008

Sent to me by James Bird - 45th Inf Div

Bill Mauldin wrote in his book. The Brass Ring about the 1945 Memorial Day ceremony at Anzio-Nettuno Cemetery.

Mauldin told how General Lucian Truscott turned his back on visitors and VIPs and spoke to the dead. He apologized to the dead for their presence here. He said everybody tells leaders it is not their fault that men get killed in war, but that every leader knows in his own heart this is not altogether true. He said he hoped everybody here [deceased veterans] through any mistake of his would forgive Him. but he realized that was asking a hell of a lot under the circumstances. Truscott did say he would not speak about the glorious dead because he didn’t see much glory in getting killed in you late teens or early twenties. He promised that if in the future he ran into anybody, especially old men, who though death in battle was glorious, he would straighten them out. He said he thought that was the least he could do.
