Now Marion, check this out. I went to the ABMC site and did a search by UNIT. I tried entering 540th Engineer REgiment and nothing. Then I simply entered "540" and here are my hits.

Remember---these are soldiers still buried on foriegn soil. And I counted 5 different cemeteries.

Go to this link to search by Unit: http://www.abmc.gov/listunit.php

I'll let you do the same for the 36th Engineers.

Wow. That unit paid a hugh sacrifice.

Pretty impressive yes? I have that link on the main site and have found that many of the people that visit have used it and found people they knew.

The 540th fought long and hard and paid a high price in KIA's and casualties. They were in service for a long period too, from November 1942 to the end of the war. They saw a lot of territory, built a lot of bridges, unearthed a lot of mines, etc. They also fought as infantry and did so in the Ardennes/Alsace Campaign. I really admire them and it's hard for me to imagine all they went through. :pdt34:

Thanks for posting that here. I appreciate all your time and your efforts. :pdt34:

What happened on 1 March 1944?? There are 8 with that as the date of their death---not counting the soldiers not buried there and the ones WIA.

They were at Anzio and took a direct bomb hit on Company F Billet, 21 enlisted men killed, 19 EM wounded and 3 EM missing in action.

Oh, my.

I was about to resort to pulling out my copy of "Fatal Decision" and looking for something in it. Anzio was a strange and dangerous place. One moment you could be resting in a fox hole and the next moment shells would be falling around you. The beach head was large enough to have hospitals, movies(usually underground and an occasional baseball game. But you were assured of enemy bombers and snipers looming over you waiting to take a shot at you.
