1108th (48th/235th Bns) Photos - Walt's Daughter - 09-11-2006 These photos were taken in Italy. The men and I were trying to ascertain the exact location. Some of us thought maybe San Pietro, Monte Cassino...
Am going to upload all eight photos today. Here are the first. I just LOVE these. To all the members of the 48th who were at the reunion this past weekend in Port Huron Michigan, thank you for entrusting these precious photos to me. I hope we find out more about the location and the men who are in them.
We are also trying to ascertain whether these men were from the 48th or 235th Bn of the 1108th Engineer Combat Group. 1108th (48th/235th Bns) Photos - Walt's Daughter - 09-11-2006 Next... 1108th (48th/235th Bns) Photos - Walt's Daughter - 09-11-2006 The following two photos are my absolute faves. Aren't these great.
The first photo captures a lot of feeling.
Al supplied me his best guess at this photo:
I THINK...on left rear Lt Matulich, Walker Sorrel, Lt Jack Witt, Lt Sovine(?) all of Group or 235 1108th (48th/235th Bns) Photos - Walt's Daughter - 09-11-2006 The next photo taken of the same men finds a few bantering. Everyone at the reunion were wondering what was said in the photos. I'd give anything to know why several men in the bottom row are laughing about and the top man on the left has a great smirk!
So many expressions in this one. Makes me wish I was there... 1108th (48th/235th Bns) Photos - Walt's Daughter - 09-11-2006 Thank God for scanners and photo software etc. I was able to sharpen all of these photos and adjust the brightness and contrast to bring out a lot more detail of the men and the surrounding landscape. In some of the photos a few of the men were out of focus, but I was able to bring in more detail so you can make out their faces, etc. 1108th (48th/235th Bns) Photos - Walt's Daughter - 09-11-2006 Man in "overalls". 1108th (48th/235th Bns) Photos - Walt's Daughter - 09-11-2006 Found out the following through Al Kincer of the 48th:
The Captain is Walker Sorrel, of Group Hq's., could have been in 235 at time of picture. The Lt. is Dallas Lynch of 235 & Group hqs. Walker became a doctor & I thought you might have met Dallas, he lost a foot, both men earned dsc'c. Walker died several years ago. Dallas lives in Little Rock. 1108th (48th/235th Bns) Photos - Walt's Daughter - 09-11-2006 Nine men standing in front of grove...
Al Kincer once again sent the following information:
This is probably picture of 235 hq or 1108 hq. Col Clark, on left commanded both. I don't really recognize any other of the officers. AL 1108th (48th/235th Bns) Photos - Walt's Daughter - 02-27-2015 Received this letter:
Thank you for the information Paola! 1108th (48th/235th Bns) Photos - Walt's Daughter - 02-27-2015 Your letter actually made me remember that I actually received some information (a while back) on the story behind the photographs, and when I find it, I will share that with everyone. |
