Col. Fred Mallet Walker Jr., US Army (Ret) age 87, of San Antonio, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008. Col. Walker was born and raised in Northern Michigan. He graduated from Michigan Tech in Houghton, Michigan with a degree in Engineering and received his Masters in Engineering from Stanford University. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers in North Africa and Italy in World War II. He also served in Korea and Vietnam and retired from active duty in 1970 after 30 years of service. For many years after his retirement he would return to the UP of Michigan to spend his summers fly fishing. Late in his retirement he was an active volunteer with St. Paul Episcopal Church and devoted much time to their food distribution program for 9 years. He was also a member of the choir. Col. Walker is survived by his wife, Patricia; daughters, Cynthia Wade of Phoenix, Mary Hotchkiss and Krisanne Frost both of San Antonio; sons, Fred Walker III and wife, Maggie Walker of San Antonio and Bryan J. Norwood and wife, Jan of Charleston, S.C.; six grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren. Visitation will be on Sunday, July 20, 2008 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Porter Loring. SERVICE MONDAY JULY 21, 2008 10:00 A.M. ST. PAULS EPISCOPAL CHURCH 1018 EAST GRAYSON ST. Followed by interment at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
